David Ma
Name:“New Artifact Talisman (After Martin Wong) (Ma & Wong Shared Archive)”
Medium: Acid Etched Copper Plate
Year: 2022
Dimensions: 6 x 4 inches (H x W)

Researching Martin Wong’s archive in NYU Bobst, I found photographs that Wong took in New York during the 70s. I used one (last slide) as the basis of continuing his legacy.

I experimented with compressing time and imitating age in this material. The acids eat the metal past my etches, causing new marks and grooves.

In this way I’m able to collaborate and create a combined archive of our “talking”. I also replaced the figure in the mural with myself.

Similar to Kendrick Lamar talking to Tupac Shukar in “M.A.A.d city 2”.
